The Situation
Becca is18 yrs old, a preschool teacher and the acting guardian of Sarah (16 yr old) and her brother Kevin (14 yr old), as Sarah and Kevin's parents have both been drug addicts for years. Their parents are also both in rehab.
Sarah and Kevin have been living with Becca as living with their parents was dangerous given their addictions. Becca is financially responsible for both Sarah and Kevin, and makes sure they get to and from school, and have clothes / food, etc. Sarah and Kevin also do not have any kind of health insurance.
They are all currently sharing a room in an apartment with 3 other people (6 total in the apartment, but Becca, Sarah, and Kevin all in the same room). The financial burden placed on Becca is obviously very heavy trying to take care of the needs of 3 people on a preschool teacher's salary, in addition to the emotional stress. She is not able to make her bills every month.
A couple of concerning points to the story--
-
Neither Sarah nor Kevin have been to the dentist since they were little kids, and have not been to the doctor in years for any kind of checkup
-
Kevin first tried to kill himself when he was 9 by drinking bleach, both have attempted suicide since on multiple occasions
-
Sarah and Kevin have not really ever had Christmas, their last Christmas which was years ago their mom got them a jar of Nutella
-
Becca actually still owes her parents money for court fees (she called the police on her parents a few years ago when her parents were having a domestic dispute, and her parents made her pay the court fees)
-
Becca is also a little behind on her car payment and insurance
The financial need
-
Becca's rear windshield: ~$400
-
This broke last week, and is currently covered by a trash bag, but when it slows and freezes the bag gets heavy and dumps snow into the car
-
-
Groceries / gas: ~$300
-
Doctor's visits / checkups for Sarah and Kevin: ~$300-$400
-
Both Sarah and Kevin have mental health issues, but have also not been able to see a doctor for medications in years
-
-
Christmas: Anything helps :) they both want skateboards, but $100-$200 would be amazing
-
Car payment and insurance for November: ~$350
-
-
Total: $1,650
