Dental Bonding Affordably Conceals Imperfections

Dental bonding can conceal minor imperfections on your teeth, such as chips, cracks, or discoloration. Our doctors at Stubbs Dental in Bountiful, UT and Layton, UT, can completely personalize treatment to achieve your aesthetic goals. This cosmetic dentistry procedure can deliver results in just one office visit, offering a faster and more affordable alternative to porcelain veneers. It is often combined with teeth whitening or dental crowns to provide a complete smile makeover.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding uses composite resin, the same material used in dental fillings, to cover a tooth that has been cosmetically compromised. During dental bonding, the composite resin is color-matched to the natural shade of your tooth and then carefully layered and molded for a seamless finish. For patients desiring an even brighter smile, we may recommend teeth whitening in advance. Because dental bonding leaves the natural structure of the tooth intact, treatment is reversible, making it a popular alternative to porcelain veneers. The procedure is also much more affordable than veneers.

Are You a Candidate?

If you have good oral health, with no signs of decay or gum disease, but are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth, you may make a great candidate for this cosmetic dentistry procedure. Any areas of tooth decay will first need to be addressed with a dental filling. To make sure you achieve long-lasting results, we encourage patients to stop smoking and maintain good oral hygiene.

Dental bonding can conceal teeth that are:

  • Chipped or cracked
  • Unevenly spaced with gaps in between
  • Disproportionate and make your smile appear imbalanced
  • Discolored or stained and cannot be treated with professional teeth whitening
  • Slightly misaligned or crooked

What to Expect During the Procedure

During your initial appointment, your doctor will perform a complete examination of your teeth using advanced technology. He will also review your cosmetic concerns and goals in order to create a treatment plan which is tailored to meet your needs.

Because dental bonding leaves the natural structure of the tooth intact, treatment is reversible, making it a popular alternative to porcelain veneers.

Dental bonding can typically be completed in one office visit unless teeth whitening is requested in advance. In such cases, you will undergo teeth whitening first and a follow-up appointment will be scheduled for your dental bonding procedure. Your procedure will include:

Shade Selection

The doctor will use a color chart guide to select the shade best suited to your natural teeth. He will then tint the resin and prepare the treatment area.

Tooth Preparation

During this phase, the teeth that do not require bonding will be carefully covered with dental strips. An etching solution will then be applied to each tooth undergoing bonding. This solution creates tiny fissures in the surface of your tooth so that the bonding agent adheres more strongly.

Bonding Application

Once your teeth are prepped, the doctor will use specialized dental instruments to layer and mold the composite resin over your teeth. Composite resin has a putty-like consistency and requires an eye for detail and specially trained techniques to deliver aesthetically pleasing results.

Curing and Polishing

A special ultraviolet (UV) light will then be used to solidify the resin. The doctor will remove the dental strips and trim the resin to refine your results. To finalize your results, your teeth will be checked for proper occlusion and polished for a natural sheen.
